I think that President Trump's choice to call the coronavirus the "Chinese Virus" is stupid with two O's. Trump claims it is not racism, seeing as the coronavirus originated in China. I totally agree with him. People shouldn't be so soft. However, President Trump doesn't seem to understand that he is the President of the United States. He represents every citizen, and especially his voters. Anything he says will be heard. Quite frankly, some of Trump's voters are racist. Some are not as bright as others. By using the phrase "Chinese Virus", it can increase xenophobia for people of Asian descent. THAT, is the problem. It prompts people to sneer and shun Asians, because the president had no problem calling it the "Chinese virus ". Asians already have been ridiculed and blamed for the Coronavirus, and this would only worsen it. The politics of naming is a difficult topic to navigate, and Mr. Trump is only adding fuel to the fire in this difficult time for the entire world.
It's a good thing, therefore, that he saw the harm in his choice of words. “It is very important that we totally protect our Asian American community in the United States, and all around the world. They are amazing people, and the spreading of the Virus is NOT their fault in any way, shape, or form,” Trump tweeted.
