Donald Trump Banned on Twitter, And Other Social Media Platforms

Twitter banned President Trump's twitter on Jan. 9th 2021, "due to the risk of further incitement of violence," Twitter said. Twitter added, "In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action." Specifically, Twitter suspended the account "@realDonaldTrump", so it was not directly targeted at Trump himself.

The following trading day, Twitter stock dropped around 5%, with people getting angry over Big Tech and the power they have when it comes to censoring people.

I believe Twitter shouldn't have suspended Trump's account. That also applies to Facebook, Instagram and TikTok(ironically). It's a little overboard at this point. Although it is true that Twitter is a private business and is not regulated nor held in check by the First Amendment, this ban sets a dangerous precedent and will logically ruffle some feathers. For one, it shows just how powerful Big Tech has become and will continue to if not held in check in some shape or form. These social media giants have the power to censor anyone anywhere, for reasons set forward by themselves. Moreover, it is also hypocritical that Twitter and Jack decided to suspend Trump's account for "violence", when the platform has multiple accounts doing worse and yet facing no consequences.
